Free time is an essential part of a child’s day, offering them a chance to unwind, bond with friends or parents, and explore their world through play. Free time also presents an opportunity for productive engagement. One way to achieve this balance between enjoyment and growth is through educational games, which turn playtime into a valuable learning experience. Childhood is a time of rapid mental development, and every experience can be a learning opportunity.

Educational games are tools designed to teach children new skills or concepts while entertaining them. There are different games, and they all target different areas of development, such as problem-solving, logical or/and quick thinking, math and language skills, the world around us, emotional intellegence and so on. Per example, games like puzzles or strategy based card games challenge kids to think critically and make decisions, which can then on continue into analytical thinking and skills, while story-based games in which the children read, spell or are story-telling improve their ability to express themselved and improve vocabularity. Old-fashioned outdoor games like hopscoth, treasure hunts etc, can also be educational. These games teach counting, strategy, and even basic physics concepts in a playful environment. Also, these days there are also a lot of online games and apps with educational content, which are easily accessible. While digital games are engaging, it’s essential to mix them with physical or board games to avoid over-reliance on screens. Parents can adapt these games to make them more challenging or educational for their children’s age and skill level.

It’s really important that parents encourage educational play, even if sometimes even that seems impossible. The parents should choose the right games for their children – their interests, age, capabilities. Its really important to find games that challenge the kids, but not too much because if something is really difficult it will cause frustration. The parents can use this as a shared activity, where they guide and encourage learning with the kids, while strengthening the parent-child relationship. Other educational games are perfect for solo play, helping children develop independence and self-motivation.

Free time is not just about relaxing—it’s a chance to grow. Educational games transform downtime into a productive yet enjoyable experience, blending the joys of play with meaningful skill-building. Whether played with friends, family, or solo, these games help children develop essential life skills in a way that feels natural and fun.
