The Effects of Computer Games on Language Learning

In today’s world, many children have access to the internet and games.(online, multiplayer, story-based, etc. ) Technology plays a significant role in education, and computer games have become an increasingly popular tool for language learning. I want to give brief information about the positive effects of computer games in ESL studies. Understanding the positive and negative effects of computer games can help educators and learners maximize their potential. Especially in story-based games, a player needs to prevail the storyline so that (s)he can complete the game. While playing, many children either use online dictionaries or translate. While looking at the game and learning the word, they can visualize that word so that they can remember it later but this does not mean that they are doing it to memorize new words. The main reason is to complete the game so the words are stored in the unconscious area of their brain. Da Silva (2014) in his study noted that certain language and speech patterns might have contexts in video games. To demonstrate how video games could help pupils strengthen their skills, he chose the game named Breath of Fire IV. He discovered that playing video games can assist kids in developing their receptive skills (reading and listening) as well as their expressive skills (writing and speaking). He asserted that by introducing players to new vocabulary and then instantly presenting them with the appropriate context, video games help players develop receptive language abilities. According to their findings, more than 35% of gamers believe that reading material related to gaming helps them become better readers.

In multiplayer games, one of the most notable benefits of this type of game for language learning is their ability to engage learners in an interactive and enjoyable way. Players need to speak in order to communicate with each other. One of the benefits of online playing is that they don’t usually judge one another’s English level because the main reason is to win the game. So, the language is just a tool for the prize. This social interaction not only reinforces language but also builds confidence and cultural awareness. This helps a comfortable area for speaking more and without thinking about their errors.

Players of role-playing games (RPGs) spend time in virtual worlds where they must interact with characters, follow directions, and navigate conversations. Players' vocabulary and understanding abilities naturally grow as a result of this exposure to relevant language. In addition, because many games are narratively directed, players are encouraged to read text and comprehend conversation, which promotes better reading abilities.

The ability of computer games to motivate is another benefit. Games are made to capture and maintain interest, in contrast with traditional teaching approaches. Because of this, they work especially well for younger students or those who might find standard study techniques boring.

Although these advantages, using computer games alone to learn a language has downsides. The vocabulary used in games, which frequently tends toward casual or common phrases, is one problem. Though these language types are helpful in informal contexts, they cannot prepare students for formal communication. Another downside is that children can’t link the other meanings of the word because when they translate and learn for the game, there are other usages of the words and it can be hard to link that meaning to the other one. Additionally, some games use simplified language that, while accessible, may not challenge students or introduce them to complex grammar and vocabulary.

Another potential drawback is the risk of distraction. The primary purpose of most games is entertainment, not education, which can lead players to focus more on gameplay than on language acquisition. This is especially true for younger gamers, who could put more emphasis on winning or progressing in the game than on engaging with linguistic material. Gaming too much can also result in poor time management, which may interfere with studying.

A balanced strategy is required to maximize the advantages of computer games for language acquisition while minimizing their disadvantages. When used with language-learning objectives in mind, popular games like The Sims or Minecraft can also be beneficial. Some educational games are also specifically designed for language acquisition, such as Duolingo or Memrise, which can provide targeted practice in vocabulary and grammar.

While keeping an eye on screen time and content, educators and parents should help students choose games that foster engagement and critical thinking.

To clear up, computer games can be a useful tool for language acquisition since they provide social, contextual, and engaging experiences that may not be available with more conventional approaches. However, thoughtful use and cautious selection are necessary for their success. Learners can have the best of both worlds—fun and successful language acquisition—by finding a balance between gaming and other learning techniques.
